Quest — Earth, at night, wearing a hat

Standing Slightly Closer

There is no pay. I asked whether you would like to do it. A pause. You said yes

The Hat Man is one of the game's stranger recurring figures — a silhouette that finds the player at night, formal and unbothered, who has apparently been the subject of one of the game's own idle lines for a long time already ("I could stand slightly closer if that would help"). This quest turns that background oddity into a proper conversation: an unpaid apprenticeship interview, conducted courteously, for a job that is objectively awful.

The gate is the costume, not a line of dialogue claiming it

Reaching this quest requires two things to be genuinely true at once: a hat actually carried in the player's own inventory, and it actually being night in the game world — not a dialogue option that merely claims either. The only way to reach the conversation at all is to go find a hat and then wait for real darkness, which is exactly what the Hat Man himself does every night. The requirement is the joke.

The interview

He's already there the moment the player turns around — "which you are beginning to accept as simply how he arrives." He looks at the hat for slightly too long ("that is a hat," confirming a rumour) and asks, plainly, whether the player would like to do what he does.

What follows is a genuine job interview for the strangest job in the game, delivered entirely straight-faced:

  • The method. "The first thing is the standing. Not looming — looming is a posture and it reads as effort. You simply stand, at the foot, and you are there." The second thing is not moving — people wake because something moved, so staying still the whole time takes considerably longer to be noticed and is far more effective.
  • The duration. Until morning, or until they say his name — whichever comes first. "It is almost never the second."
  • The hat's actual purpose. "Because a shape is frightening and a MAN is not. The hat makes me a shape." Not for the fear it creates, purely for the wearer's own comfort during a long night.
  • Being seen. Every single night, by design. "Being unseen would be trespassing; being SEEN is the whole service." If someone screams, that counts as a completed visit — leaving at that point is doing it correctly.

The practical, and the four minutes he will not explain

The actual assignment: stand at the foot of any bed tonight, don't move until ready to leave — then stay four minutes longer than that. "The four minutes are the entire trade." He never elaborates on why. Asked whose bed it should be, the answer is simply "anyone. It has never once mattered, and I have thought about that a great deal." Asked what the player gets out of it: nothing. There is no pay. He only ever asked whether the player would like to do it — and they said yes.

What he is, and what he isn't allowed to say

The last beat turns melancholy rather than eerie. He explains that people will ask what the player now is, and the honest answer must be "I don't know" — because neither of them actually knows. He's done this work a very long time and has never once been given a job title, only a name other people guessed at: the Hat Man, "as if the hat were the notable part." Asked what the notable part actually is, he answers plainly: "that I stay. Anyone can arrive."

A genuinely unusual quest brief

This one began from a short, almost throwaway-sounding operator request — "add a hatman questline where you have to dress up as the hatman and watch people sleep and do other hat man things" — and the game's own development notes are explicit that the Hat Man's own established idle lines ("when there is a hole in the sky, fly at it, that is not a riddle, I am aware it sounds like one") weren't reinvented for this quest, only built around. The tone that resulted — formal, patient, quietly sad — came entirely from taking that existing voice seriously rather than treating the premise as purely comedic.

Version history

  • v442 — added (approx. 2026-08-08), directly from the operator's own quoted request above.

Trivia

  • The Original, a later and otherwise unrelated quest on the Moon, deliberately inverts this one's entire premise — the watcher gets watched, this time by the player, while the Hat Man himself sleeps. That symmetry is stated directly in the later quest's own development notes rather than being something the wiki inferred.
  • The Hat Man's idle lines existed in the game long before this quest did — this is one of several cases in Blister Online where a background flavour character quietly already had enough voice written for them to build a full quest around later.
  • Finishing this quest is the gate for The Hollow Moon, the three-part questline that follows the Hat Man out to the Moon's crater — and he references the player's own answer to his apprenticeship offer directly in that questline's opening dialogue.
