The Oddments Bench
Three weapons were named, coloured and statted in the game files, with no way to ever obtain them. This bench is that way
Stands in the junkyard region — "the Scrap Arc" — reachable on foot or by aircraft with no gate and no vehicle required. It exists because an audit of Earth's item table found twenty materials that nothing in the game consumed, eight of which appeared in only two or three places in the entire file (the item registry, one mob drop table, and sometimes a sell price) with no recipe, no station, and no contract ever asking for them: Candy Cane, Rock Candy, Car Battery, Crab Shell, Wolf-sized Troll Hide, Wild Nectar, Golem Core, and Formic Acid Gland.
Three weapons that were never reachable at all
The same audit turned up something sharper than dead materials: three weapons defined in the item table that could not be obtained by any path in the game — no recipe, no drop table, no shop, no chest. Each occurs exactly once in the entire file, on its own declaration line, and never again: the Candy Cane Saber (melee), the Gumball Blaster (gun), and the Wand of Dusk (wand). Their neighbouring sibling entries in the same part of the table all drop normally — these three were written, statted, and simply never hooked up to anything that could hand them out.
Building it
Raise the bench once per character for 6 Planks, 3 Iron Bars, and 6 Scrap Metal. From there it offers three permanent fittings (each capped at three per character) and three repeatable weapon patterns — [R] cycles between the six options, [E] performs whichever is selected, and a maxed-out fitting simply drops out of the cycle.
The three fittings
| Fitting | Cost (each, up to 3) | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Vice | 4 Crab Shell, 3 Troll Hide, 2 Lion Mane | Removes one unit from every ingredient of every pattern, never below one. |
| Wax Pot | 5 Wild Nectar, 6 Glowpollen | Adds one more copy per craft, so a single pattern can yield 1 to 4 at once. |
| Dynamo | 2 Car Battery, 6 Ant Chitin, 4 Formic Acid Gland | Powers the bench's arc lamp — the Wand of Dusk cannot be crafted without at least one. |
The three patterns
| Weapon | Type | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Candy Cane Saber | Melee | 14 Candy Cane, 10 Rock Candy, 3 Iron Bars |
| Gumball Blaster | Gun | 12 Gumdrop, 3 Car Battery, 4 Copper Bars |
| Wand of Dusk | Wand | 10 Twilight Dust, 6 Void Shard, 1 Golem Core, 3 Gold Bars, and at least one Dynamo fitting |
All three patterns are repeatable — the oddments the bench consumes never run out of a use for them. Deliberately no cash or XP is ever awarded by the bench itself; the entire point is unlocking access to three items the game had already fully designed and simply never connected to anything.
Why a crafting bench, and why here
The game's own development notes frame the decision explicitly: adding a wholly new destination was ruled out because nine prior cycles running had already been adding new places, and the problem this particular audit found wasn't that the world was too small — it was that the world already contained things it had never connected. The bench sits in the junkyard specifically because that's where a tinker working in salvage would plausibly be, and because two of the eight dead materials belong to that region already.
Version history
- The Oddments Bench added, alongside the audit that found it was needed. No existing recipe, drop table, price, or combat number was touched — every fitting and pattern is new, additive content layered on top of materials and weapon entries that already existed in the game files, several of them completely unused until this point.
Trivia
- Deliberately, no new item entry was ever added for any of this — all three weapons already existed in the item table (just unreachable), so building or using the bench never moves any completion tracker's denominator, including the Trophy Room's Furniture Collection count.
- This bench is the direct predecessor to The Pauper's Pyre — the same kind of dead-end sweep, re-run one version later, found seven more unconsumed materials that this bench's own audit had missed.
- A character saved before this system existed simply loads into a world with an unbuilt patch of junkyard dirt where the bench would stand, and loses nothing.
