Tiered Gear
Six skills, 200 tiers each, one unlocking every five levels — and this is also where the game's "armor" actually lives
Well over half of the game's roughly 2,200 items — 1,205 of them — aren't hand-authored at all. They're tiered gear: a generated item ladder, one full ladder per skill, with a new tier craftable every five levels of that skill. Mining, Woodcutting, Attack, Defence, Ranged, and Magic each carry their own 200-tier ladder — a level 1,000 skill has every tier available, though nothing in the game currently expects a character to actually reach that.
A pickaxe, an axe, a sword, armor, a gun, or a wand — depending on the skill
What a tier actually is depends on which skill it belongs to:
- Mining and Woodcutting gear are tools — a Pickaxe and an Axe ladder — and their bonus is speed and yield, not damage.
- Attack gear are real melee weapons ("Armament"), each tier a genuine craftable sword with its own damage.
- Ranged and Magic gear are real guns ("Blaster") and wands, each a genuinely different craftable weapon with its own damage, fire rate, and range — a magic tier's element (fire, frost, chain, or tidal) cycles through the four spell types as you climb.
- Defence gear is the game's actual armor. There's no separate armor system with head, body, and leg slots to fill — Defence's own gear ladder is armor, and its bonus is a flat hit-point boost rather than a damage number.
Every tier is named from a themed word list for its skill (Defence runs Padded, Leather, Chain, Plate, Tempered, and onward through exotic materials) combined with a noun for what it is — "Plate Armor," "Tempered Armor," and so on. Past the first 20 tiers the name gains an ascending prefix (Greater, Ascendant, Transcendent, Mythic) and a Roman numeral, so a tier at any depth still reads as a distinct, ever-escalating item rather than a plain number.
Only your best owned tier ever counts
A tier's bonus isn't something you equip in a slot — it's something you own. The game checks every tier of a skill's ladder you've ever crafted or acquired and applies only the single highest one's bonus; lower tiers you're still carrying do nothing extra, and nothing needs to be actively worn or selected. Reaching the required level for a new tier only means you're now allowed to craft it — the bonus itself doesn't apply until you actually do.
A second way to gear up for Defence: fight for it instead of grinding it
Five named armor pieces — Voidrend Plate, Infernal Aegis, Titanguard Plate, Starfall Exosuit, and World Ender Bulwark — sit above the normal 200-tier ladder as extra Defence tiers, but aren't unlocked by Defence level at all. Each instead requires a specific Total Level threshold (70, 80, 95, 110, and 130) and is crafted from the exact materials the matching Mega-Terror boss drops — the same farming loop that already funds that tier's strongest weapons. A player who'd rather hunt Void Colossus or the World Ender than grind Defence directly can gear up defensively through the fight instead, reaching hit-point bonuses (up to 3,200 for the World Ender Bulwark) that would otherwise take Defence level 240 to 330 or more to match.
A weapon's listed damage isn't what actually lands
Player-dealt damage in Blister Online passes through a single global multiplier that cuts it to a tenth of a weapon's raw stat before it ever reaches an enemy, applied to essentially every hit that isn't specifically exempted. According to the development log, several of the project's own internal balance tools were built before this multiplier existed and never accounted for it, which for a time made the weapon ladder look like it had badly outpaced the bestiary — one such tool reported the median enemy dying in roughly a quarter of a second by the middle of the Attack ladder. Corrected for the real multiplier, the same median enemy takes around three minutes at that point in the ladder, and even the toughest enemies in the game take several minutes at a very high Attack tier — the gear ladder has not run away from the bestiary at all; if anything, combat in the early-to-mid game is on the slow side. The multiplier itself is untouched by this correction — only the analysis of what it means for pacing was wrong.
Melee attack speed and per-swing damage are separately adjustable on top of all of this — see the Melee Speed and Melee Damage sliders on the Pause menu.
Trivia
- Attack, Ranged, and Magic gear tiers are the source of the overwhelming majority of the game's 829 weapons — melee, gun, and wand weapons are, for the most part, this ladder rather than a separately hand-authored list.
- The five Mega-Terror armor pieces are appended to the Defence ladder as tiers 201 through 205, above the ordinary 200 — the exact same "best owned tier" mechanism picks them up automatically, so reaching one doesn't require any new equip system of its own.
